As universities grapple with the rise of AI tools in education, a complex picture emerges of stressed students turning to artificial intelligence while institutions scramble to detect and deter cheating.

In a case reported by the BBC, a university student named Hannah faced an academic misconduct panel after using AI to complete an essay while ill with Covid. "I felt incredibly stressed and just under enormous pressure to do well," she told the BBC. "I was really struggling and my brain had completely given up." Her experience highlights the growing tensions between academic integrity and the accessibility of AI tools in higher education.

Universities are increasingly turning to AI detection software to identify potential cheating, but these tools face significant limitations. According to research published by Scribbr, even the best publicly available AI detectors achieve only 84% accuracy in premium tools and 68% in free versions.

These tools primarily analyse two key factors that Scribbr identifies: perplexity (the predictability of text) and burstiness (the variation in sentence structure and length). However, these metrics can be misleading. Scribbr warns that human-written text can be flagged as AI-generated if it happens to match certain criteria, while edited or paraphrased AI content might slip through undetected.

Universities are adopting varying approaches to AI use. The BBC reports that some institutions implement complete bans unless specifically authorised, while others permit limited use for grammar and vocabulary checking. Student attitudes also vary widely. As one student named Taylor told the BBC, "You've got to embrace it. You can ask it questions and it helps you out. You can use it to create a guide to structure your work. It's good for exam prep too." However, another student, Zyren, expressed frustration to the BBC about a friend who "openly admitted to me they use AI, full on copied and pasted an essay they got from Chat GPT."

Universities UK acknowledged to the BBC that institutions are "aware of the potential risks posed by AI tools in the context of exams and assessment." However, their primary response has been to focus on penalties rather than adaptation, with "severe penalties for students found to be submitting work that is not their own."

The Department for Education told the BBC that "Generative AI has great potential to transform the Higher Education sector," but acknowledged that integration requires "careful consideration." This understated position belies the urgency of the situation.

The path forward may require fundamental changes to academic assessment. Rather than simply detecting AI use, universities face the challenge of preparing students for a world where AI is an integral part of professional life. This might mean rethinking traditional essay-based assessments, developing more authentic evaluation methods, and integrating AI literacy into curriculum design.
