In the first major election cycle with widespread access to generative AI and the first year Claude has been available, Anthropic reports that election-related activities made up less than 0.5% of total usage across its platforms. The company shared these findings in a blog post about AI's impact on elections throughout 2024.

During the weeks leading up to the U.S. election, election-related queries increased slightly to just over 1% of total usage. According to analysis from Clio, the company's automated tool for analysing real-world language model use, approximately two-thirds of these conversations focused on understanding political systems, analysing policies, and examining political data and trends.

The company implemented several safety measures throughout the year, including comprehensive policy enforcement that prohibited political campaigning and election interference. Anthropic reported approximately 100 election-related enforcement actions globally, ranging from warnings to account bans for repeat violators.

Their approach included regular testing of Claude's responses to misinformation narratives, particularly during elections in multiple countries including India, South Africa, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and the European Union. The company also directed users seeking voting information to authoritative sources such as TurboVote/Democracy Works in the U.S. and official election authorities in other countries.

A notable challenge emerged during France's snap elections, which occurred after Claude's knowledge cutoff date of April 2024. This experience led Anthropic to implement clearer communications about the model's knowledge limitations through system prompts and user interface updates.

The company emphasised that unlike social media platforms, Claude's one-on-one interaction model reduces the risk of amplifying misinformation, and its text-only output eliminates concerns about deepfake content. Anthropic maintains that while current abuse vectors remain low, they continue to monitor and respond to evolving threats to election integrity.
