Anthropic has pushed the boat out with its new release, Claude 3.5 Sonnet. Following hot on the heels of GPT-4o here is the nitty gritty on the new Sonnet.

According to Anthropic this new model represents a significant leap forward in AI intelligence, outperforming both competitor models and its predecessor, Claude 3 Opus, across various evaluations.

Key Features and Improvements

- Enhanced Intelligence: Anthropic claim that Claude 3.5 Sonnet sets new industry benchmarks in graduate-level reasoning, undergraduate-level knowledge, and coding proficiency.

- Increased Speed: Anthropic state that the new model operates at twice the speed of Claude 3 Opus, making it more efficient for complex tasks. (I can verify that in my own colloquial language ‘its bloody quick’ compared to anything on the LLM front I’ve used before.)

- Cost-Effectiveness: With its improved performance and competitive pricing, Claude 3.5 Sonnet offers an attractive balance of capability and affordability.

- Advanced Vision Capabilities: The model demonstrates performance in visual reasoning tasks, surpassing previous versions and putting Anthropic firmly in the mix for MultiModal supremacy.

Alongside Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Anthropic introduced a new feature called Artifacts on their Claude.ai platform.

Users can now see AI-generated content like code snippets or text documents in a dedicated window.

Real-time editing and collaboration on AI-generated content is also now possible.

Anthropic marks a shift from conversational AI to a more collaborative work environment.

The introduction of Artifacts is just the beginning of Anthropic's vision for Claude.ai, with plans to expand into team collaboration and organisational knowledge management.

With Safety first seeming to be how Anthropic wants to be viewed in the Wild West of LLMs, they’re keen to stress that this new model has undergone rigorous testing to reduce potential misuse.

External experts, including the UK's Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute, have been engaged to test and refine safety mechanisms.

Anthropic has incorporated feedback from child safety experts (Thorn) to update classifiers and fine-tune models.

Anthropic maintains a strong stance on user privacy/data protection: "We do not train our generative models on user-submitted data unless a user gives us explicit permission to do so. To date we have not used any customer or user-submitted data to train our generative models."

Anthropic has also outlined several exciting developments on the horizon.

Completion of the Claude 3.5 model family with the release of Claude 3.5 Haiku and Claude 3.5 Opus. Exploration of new modalities and features to support more business use cases. And development of a Memory feature to enable Claude to remember user preferences and interaction history.

Claude 3.5 Sonnet looks like a significant step forward for Anthropic. By offering the holy trinity of enhanced intelligence, speed, and cost-effectiveness, whilst at the same time focusing on safety, ethics, and privacy it looks like a good time to be Team Anthropic.
