Google has announced updates to NotebookLM, including customisable Audio Overviews and a new Business version, as the product sheds its "Experimental" label.
NotebookLM, built on Google's Gemini 1.5 AI model, now allows users to guide its Audio Overview feature, adjusting the focus and expertise level of AI-generated discussions. Users can provide specific instructions before generating a "Deep Dive" Audio Overview, effectively customising how the AI hosts cover the material.
The update introduces a "Customize" button, enabling users to provide instructions that change how the AI covers their material. Google describes this feature as "like slipping the AI hosts a quick note right before they go on the air."
Additionally, the update brings background listening functionality, allowing users to continue working within NotebookLM while listening to Audio Overviews. This feature enables simultaneous source querying, citation retrieval, and quote exploration without interrupting the audio.
In a significant expansion of the product's reach, Google has announced NotebookLM Business, an upcoming version tailored for businesses, universities, and organisations. This version will be offered through Google Workspace and promises enhanced features, although specific details and pricing are yet to be revealed.
Google reports that over 80,000 organisations are already using NotebookLM, indicating strong adoption in professional settings. The company has opened applications for the NotebookLM Business pilot programme, offering early access to new features, training, and email support. More information about the general availability and pricing of NotebookLM Business is expected later this year.
NotebookLM allows individuals to upload sources and instantly leverage AI expertise grounded in their material. Google emphasises that personal data is never used to train the system.
