Internationally acclaimed media artist Refik Anadol is pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence in art with his latest project, "Large Nature Model," utilising Meta's open-source Llama models.
In a recent episode of the "Boz To The Future" podcast, hosted by Meta's CTO Andrew Bosworth, Anadol revealed details about his groundbreaking work at the intersection of AI and artistic expression.
Anadol's studio has been fine-tuning Llama models with a nature-focused dataset, comprising over half a billion images collected from partners including the Smithsonian and National Geographic over four years. "Right now, everything is about large language models and about human reasoning, but we thought that perhaps nature is also very important for controlling what happens," Anadol explained.
The artist emphasised the crucial role of open-source AI in advancing artistic innovation. "Your open source movement is so important—like, so essential," Anadol told Bosworth. "Open source information is like gold for art making."
Anadol's approach involves not just creating art but also educating the public about the AI processes behind it. He believes that demystifying AI's complexities will lead to better understanding and acceptance of the technology.
"I believe AI is full of possibilities, but possibilities come with responsibilities," Anadol stated, highlighting the ethical considerations in working with vast datasets and AI technologies.
