Meta's inaugural Llama Hackathon in India attracted over 270 participants last month, with the winning team developing an AI-powered healthcare solution that provides medication information in regional languages.
The 30-hour event, hosted by Reskilll in collaboration with Meta, showcased the capabilities of Meta's Llama 3 models and WhatsApp APIs, drawing more than 1,500 applications from which 95 teams were selected to compete. The hackathon focused on three key themes: AI for Societal Good, Build on WhatsApp, and AI on Edge, with participants vying for a total prize pool of $7,000 USD.
CurePharma AI claimed the top prize of $3,000 USD with their healthcare solution designed to bridge the accessibility gap in linguistically diverse and rural areas. The system allows users to scan prescriptions, access local language translations, and order medications through e-pharmacies, leveraging Llama's advanced language capabilities.
The second-place winner, CivicFix, developed a WhatsApp bot that enables citizens to report local infrastructure issues through various media formats. The solution, which earned a $2,000 USD prize, automatically classifies and prioritises reports for local authorities.
Evalssment, securing third place and $1,000 USD, created an AI-driven tool to assist educators with grading and assignment creation.
The event received support from major technology partners, including AWS, Qdrant, and Tune AI, with over 25 industry mentors providing guidance to participants throughout the hackathon. The intense development period was fueled by more than 800 cans of energy drinks and 80 boxes of coffee and tea.
