OpenAI and Hearst have announced a new content partnership that will integrate Hearst's extensive newspaper and domestic magazine content into OpenAI's products, as revealed on October 8.
The collaboration will incorporate content from over 20 Hearst magazine brands and more than 40 newspapers into OpenAI's advanced AI products, including ChatGPT. This move aims to enhance the information available to ChatGPT's 200 million weekly users, spanning topics from local news to lifestyle content.
Jeff Johnson, President of Hearst Newspapers, emphasised the importance of professional journalism in AI products. "As generative AI matures, it's critical that journalism created by professional journalists be at the heart of all AI products," Johnson said. He added, "This agreement allows the trustworthy and curated content created by Hearst Newspapers' award-winning journalists to be part of OpenAI's products like ChatGPT — creating more timely and relevant results."
Debi Chirichella, President of Hearst Magazines, commented on the partnership's role in shaping the future of magazine content. "This collaboration ensures that our high-quality writing and expertise, cultural and historical context and attribution and credibility are promoted as OpenAI's products evolve," Chirichella stated.
Brad Lightcap, COO of OpenAI, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership's potential. "Bringing Hearst's trusted content into our products elevates our ability to provide engaging, reliable information to our users," Lightcap said.
The partnership includes iconic Hearst brands such as Houston Chronicle, San Francisco Chronicle, Esquire, Cosmopolitan, ELLE, Runner's World, and Women's Health. Content from these sources will be integrated into OpenAI's products with appropriate citations and direct links to original Hearst sources, ensuring transparency and easy access for users.
The partnership is limited to Hearst's magazine and newspaper content, with the company's other businesses not included in the agreement.
