OpenAI has announced the addition of three new members to its Board of Directors. The new board members bring extensive experience in technology, nonprofit organisations, and complex regulatory environments.
1. Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann: A physician and nonprofit leader, Dr. Desmond-Hellmann has served as the CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She has also held leadership roles at Genentech and serves on the boards of Pfizer and the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
2. Nicole Seligman: A globally recognized corporate and civic leader and lawyer, Seligman has held senior leadership positions at Sony Corporation, including EVP and General Counsel. She currently serves on the boards of Paramount Global, MeiraGTx Holdings PLC, and Intuitive Machines, Inc., and has worked on complex legal matters for high-profile clients, including President William Jefferson Clinton and Hillary Clinton.
3. Fidji Simo: As the CEO and Chair of Instacart and a former Vice President and Head of the Facebook App, Simo brings extensive experience in consumer technology, operations, strategy, and product development. She also founded the Metrodora Institute, a medical clinic and research foundation focused on neuroimmune axis disorders.
Additionally, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will rejoin the Board of Directors, working closely with the new members and current board members Adam D'Angelo, Larry Summers, and Bret Taylor, as well as OpenAI's senior management.
As Bret Taylor, Chair of the OpenAI board, stated about the new appointments "Their experience and leadership will enable the Board to oversee OpenAI's growth, and to ensure that we pursue OpenAI's mission of ensuring artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity."
