At the HIMSS 2024 Global Health Conference, a consortium of leading healthcare organisations announced the creation of the Trustworthy & Responsible AI Network (TRAIN). The network includes prominent healthcare institutions such as AdventHealth, Advocate Health, Boston Children's Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, Duke Health, and Johns Hopkins Medicine, among others, with Microsoft serving as the technology enabling partner.

From patient screening and treatment development to automating administrative tasks and enhancing public health, AI is creating new possibilities for healthcare organisations and practitioners. The need for rigorous development and evaluation standards,to ensure effective and responsible applications, is paramount.

TRAIN members will collaborate to improve the quality and trustworthiness of AI in healthcare through several key initiatives:

1. Sharing best practices related to the use of AI in healthcare settings, including safety, reliability, and monitoring of AI algorithms, as well as the skillsets required for responsible AI management.

2. Enabling registration of AI used for clinical care or clinical operations through a secure online portal.

3. Providing tools to measure outcomes associated with AI implementation, including best practices for studying AI efficacy and value in healthcare settings, leveraging privacy-preserving environments, and assessing bias in subpopulations.

4. Facilitating the development of a federated national AI outcomes registry for organisations to share real-world outcomes related to the efficacy, safety, and optimisation of AI algorithms.

To ensure that every organisation, regardless of resources, has access to TRAIN's benefits, the network is collaborating with OCHIN, which serves a national network of community health organisations, and TruBridge, a partner and conduit to community healthcare. This collaboration aims to represent the diverse experiences of patients and providers from underserved communities in the creation and adoption of new AI solutions.
